Between 1903 and 1914, 1000 women were imprisoned in United Kingdom, but why ?
The suffragettes was
a feminist movement in the early 20th Century in the United Kingdom.
The aim was equal voting rights. Her foundator was Emmeline Pankhurst (
mit her daughters) who created the WSPU: "Women's Social and Political
Union" in 1903. Emmeline Pankhurst is born th 15th July 1858 and died on
the 14th June 1928. She was a political activist because she lived in a
family wich was very engaged in british politic. Pankhurst was a
feminist and her movement was women-only. With her groupe, Emmeline used
sometimes violence or "extreme methods" for achieving her aim and a lot
of women were arrested or treated badly (1000 suffragettes including
Emmeline Pankhurst, were imprisoned between 1908 and 1914). But during
the first World War, WSPU members stopped demonstation and they were
focus on the war effort then the government released all prisoners of
the suffragettes movement.
The 2nd July 1928, all women (over 21 years old) in United Kingdom could vote after a fight of 25 years.
